Charter Commission Composition and Application to Serve

The Board of Selectmen intends to appoint a diverse and balanced team of residents who have collective expertise, experience and knowledge that include:

  • Public office experience;
  • Town operations experience;
  • Community service;
  • Legal;
  • Exposure to finance, compliance, board/governance, administration, operations;
  • Ability to find consensus with people contributing with diverse views;
  • Understanding of the Governance Study Committee’s report and the objectives of establishing a Charter Commission;
  • Time and ability to attend meetings and to contribute individually and as a team. 

Commission Compliance Sec. 7-190 of CT Statutes concerning balanced party affiliation and number of officials:

The nominated slate must meet the following criteria to ensure balanced political party affiliation, including the following, depending on size of the commission:

For Commission appointments to a seven (7) person commission: four (4) from majority party (Democratic Party) and three (3) others, with a total of no more than two (2) serving in town government positions;

For Commission appointments to a nine (9) person commission: five (5) from majority party (Democratic Party) and four (4) others, with a total of no more than three (3) serving in town government positions.

The Board of Selectmen appointed a Charter Commission Nominating Committee to set up a process to inform the public, solicit applications, vet prospective members and to issue a recommended slate for appointment by the Selectmen at their May 10/23 meeting. 

When you submit an application, it will be acknowledged and you may be contacted by the Nominating Committee for clarification or with follow-up questions.
