Walking Tours
These
tours were developed by Seamus Robins in 1992 as his Eagle Scout Project
for Troop 13 under Scoutmaster Martin Heft.
At the lamppost is the Town Office Building, 1942. Left of flagpole is
a building once known as Colt's Store built around 1798 as a general store.
On the far side of the flagpole is 4 Maple St.. Newspaper found in the
walls was dated 1777. To the left of the flagpole is a home believed to
have been originally a one story commercial building constructed prior
to 1800. On the opposite side of Main St. is the Colt House built between
1750 and 1790. The building second to the left of the Colt House dates
to 1869. The White Building (look high to see the name) further along
Main St. was built in 1899. Across Main St. on Spring St. the stone and
wood building once was the Chester Hotel (1841). It once had a fourth
story destroyed by fire in 1903. The electric trolley service stopped
in front of the Chester Hotel by the stone wall where the name Chester
is spelled out in white stone. The trolley service ran from 1914 to 1920
when the company went bankrupt due to a serious accident. Note the horse
trough next to the former bank building. At the end of Chester center
is The Stone Store with its striking columns built in 1809. It has housed
many businesses and it was the Post Office until 1964. The upstairs was
once the Chester Library.
Although incorporated in 1836, Chester has a long history. Many of its buildings and homes have been well preserved by attentive owners.
All the walking tours start at the Lamppost downtown.
